Temps de Vi brings 40 wineries from all over Catalonia to Vilanova i la Geltrú

Temps de Vi in Vilanova i la Geltrú

There is a lot to look forward to. This year the Temps de Vi Fair of Catalan wines is back in full swing, and it will be even better than before the pandemic. The apotheosis will be on 10, 11 and 12 June on the Rambla Principal in Vilanova i la Geltrú, but this will be a festival that will last for weeks, with various activities in different parts of the city. Even in the middle of the sea.

We spoke to Carles Carbonell, co-organiser of the Temps de Vi fair in Vilanova i la Geltrú, about all this: “We wanted to be able to organise Temps de Vi again in a normal way and in the spaces we knew. I think the most important thing for us is to return to the space where the fair has become big, which is on the Rambla Principal in Vilanova. Where our environment is and where both restaurants and shops welcome us in the best possible way so that we can celebrate a great event together”.

40 wineries from all the Catalan Denominations of Origin

This year Temps de Vi will have a total of 34 stands on the Rambla with around 40 wineries from all the Catalan Designations of Origin. There will be everything from small wineries presenting curious projects to some of the best known in Catalonia. “We have always defended that this is a multi D.O. fair. We achieved it many years ago and this year we have also achieved it. We have wines from all the DOs. We will have DO Empordà, Tarragona, Priorat, Montsant, Catalunya, Alella, Bages, Conca de Barberà, Penedès, obviously… In the end we are in the Penedès territory, so a large part of the wineries are from the Penedès and Cava DOs. We are still finalising the deal, but we are on the verge”.

The variety will not only be based on the origin of the wineries. Attendees will also be able to taste all kinds of wines: “There are all kinds of styles and I think this is a great thing about the sector we are in, as you can go and find the profile you like best. I think that at the Temps de Vi fair we are lucky enough to be able to represent everything from more floral or fruity wines to aged wines, with more oak and, we could say, more classic styles”.

A full programme of activities

The activities of Temps de Vi 2022, which will be published very soon on tempsdevi.cat, will begin at the end of May and will culminate with the fair on the Rambla Principal, which is sure to be very well attended. But this time the fair will have a more staggered calendar so that everyone can access many more activities and will recover star proposals such as the Catalan wine tastings by boat.

#CatalanWine tastings by boat "Temps de Vi wanted to add the world of the sea to the fair with boat tastings, which have been a resounding success since the beginning of the event".

Catalan wine tastings by boat

Vilanova i la Geltrú is a winegrowing and seafaring town, and these two aspects of its historical personality have worked together for centuries. From the port of Vilanova, a large part of the wine production of the Penedès, also from the vineyards surrounding the town, used to leave by boat. Temps de Vi wanted to add the world of the sea to the fair with boat tastings that have been a resounding success since the fair’s inception.

Carles Carbonell explains: “These tastings take place at the Vilanova yacht club. A two-hour activity that is really worthwhile because after the tasting you go sailing with a glass of wine or sparkling wine. It’s a purely fun activity, very small, for eight people. It’s very exclusive and very cool because at the end you go with a group of friends”.

For those of you who are afraid of getting seasick, don’t worry. Inside the port the boat hardly moves at all, and once at sea it always keeps moving and the Mediterranean Sea is usually calm.

Practical guide to enjoy Temps de Vi

Temps de Vi is designed so that visitors can be surprised by new wines and Designations of Origin and at the same time enjoy and repeat the wineries that you already know from other editions and that you know never fail.

But above all, it is a great place to chat. Yes, to chat: “One very positive thing is that at Temps de Vi Vino the winemakers themselves come”, says Carles. “It’s an opportunity to talk to the same person who makes the wine. This way I think that people who come can go looking for what they are looking for. The good thing we have is that you can talk to the same wineries that are on the stands and say ‘listen, look, I like this type of wine…’ or ‘I’m coming to taste, let me see what you make…'”. And they themselves will tell you “look, we start here, we make a path, we make the history… and we finish with a very representative wine of the territory where you can find purely what we do. For those visitors who come to the fair on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, I advise them to go to the Rambla Principal, buy a ticket at any of the ticket offices and start walking up and down the Rambla, stopping at the wineries that are least crowded at that moment. Ask questions, put your ear to the ground when they are giving explanations… We also have free concerts throughout the fairgrounds every day. And if you do the tasting by boat you can go and eat on the promenade and then do the activity…”.

In the end, it’s as easy as coming to Vilanova i la Geltrú, enjoying the city, its spaces and shops, strolling through Temps de Vi and tasting a glass of Catalan wine.
